A note on Materials & Ethics

I use ethically sourced wood because it aligns with my commitment to responsible practices and environmental conservation. This includes reclaiming wood from house demolitions and renovations, working with native Australian timbers whenever possible, sourcing new wood from suppliers that know the story of each piece of wood they sell, such as CERES Fair Wood, Urban Salvage & Shiver Me Timbers. I do not support logging in native old-growth forests, which is what most furniture on the market is made from.

Reclaimed Wood

By sourcing reclaimed timber, I am reducing the demand for new timber, helping to conserve forests and minimise the environmental impact of deforestation, as well as promoting and continuing the conservation conversation around precious materials. This approach not only supports healthier ecosystems but also reduces waste, as I give new life to high-quality wood that would otherwise get sent to landfill.

Using recycled wood also means that each piece I create has a story and unique character, reflecting my dedication to sustainable craftspersonship. Ethically, it feels right to use materials that are already available, promoting a more sustainable, circular economy.

My pieces may cost a bit more because of the time and care I invest in honouring the reclaimed wood I use. Each piece requires careful selection, cleaning, and often repairing small imperfections like holes or cracks to ensure durability and beauty. This process is labour-intensive, but the result is a high-quality, one-of-a-kind item made to last.

Buying New Wood

When new wood is needed, I choose suppliers like CERES Fair Wood, Urban Salvage & Shiver Me Timbers to ensure the wood’s origin and sustainability. This means my clients and I know the full history of each piece, and support practices like responsible forestry, well-managed plantations, and quality milling by local small businesses. By sourcing from suppliers committed to sustainable forestry, I am able to offer quality products that align with my values of environmental stewardship.

Wood Finishes

I use natural, oil-based finishes wherever possible. Being penetrating - as opposed to film finishes like varnish, polyurethane etc - oil protects wood while still showing its natural beauty and feel. For furniture, I usually use hard wax oils, which provide a durable finish without synthetic additives. For kitchen and food-related items, I use either my own blend of pure tung oil and citrus terpene, or an all-natural off-the-shelf Linseed Oil/Beeswax blend. I avoid mineral oils and petroleum-based products entirely.

I hope that my clients will feel good knowing they’re choosing products that support both responsible, sustainable practices and the preservation of natural resources.

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, traditional owners and custodians of the land on which I work, make, play and live. I acknowledge their ongoing connection to country, its waters, its sky, its trees, its animals and its rhythms. I give thanks, and pay my respects to their elders, past, present and future.
